Essay questions
When  answering  an essay question, follow this format
  • Read and underline the key words in the question
  • Brainstorm the answer
  • Make a rough plan by choosing the best points for the answer
  • Think and plan in paragraphs
  • Write the answer in full
  • Proofread and correct your essay.

Exam key words
* A question will always contain key words. Key words carry important information. You should always underline or highlight the key words when you read the questions.
* These include verbs such as describe, outline, evaluate, and account for, compare and contrast- verbs indicating the kind of answer which is required.
* The key verb is followed by other content words which carry meaning. In between the key words are less important words such as prepositions (on, in, at, to, up) and articles (a, an, the).
Dealing with unknown words
* Don’t worry if you don’t understand every single word in an exam text. You can understand a text well without knowing every word.
* If you come across strange words in a text, try to make a guess at their meaning by understanding the context.  This means looking at the other words in the sentence which are associated with that word.
Proofreading
* Proofreading means reading your work to find and correct mistakes.
* We all make mistakes as we write. It is quite natural and to do with the way our mind works. It is not a sign of weakness or carelessness.  In exams, we are a bit more likely to make more mistakes, as we are working under pressure. Examiners make allowances for this, up to a point.
* It is important to allow a few minutes to proofread an answer. When you proofread, look for and correct errors in punctuation, spelling and vocabulary. Making corrections is not difficult or time-consuming, but will definitely make a difference to your grade!

Tips for IGCSE English Exam: Gore's Tutoring Dubai

IGCSE - General Tips/Advice

Note: We have Native as well as Non Native English tutors  with more than 7 years of teaching experience.

Some general advice on tests/IGCSE:

  • Write in pen (like a grown-up).
  • Read questions carefully and thoroughly.
  • Flip back to the question periodically while writing your answer, in order to remind yourself of the question/make sure you are satisfying the requirements of the task.
  • Breathe.  If you don’t, you may turn blue and fall off your chair.  We don’t want that—it looks bad for the school’s reputation.
  • Be aware (especially for Paper 3) of the common errors in your writing while writing and proofreading.  A few common errors in our class include:
    • spelling errors
      • definite/definitely
      • separate
      • words with double consonants
      • homophones (sea vs. see, steak vs. stake, etc.)
    • subject-verb agreement – particularly in complex sentences and sentences involving the verbs be and have.
    • verb tense – this is a must.  See the handout I’ve given you and ask me if you have questions.
    • plural vs. singular nouns – non-countable nouns (water, peace, friendship) GENERALLY don’t take a plural –s.
    • the vs a vs NOTHING – non-countable nouns cause problems here too - it is possible to ask for the water (the = more definite as to where it is/which water you are talking about) or ask for water generally, but to ask for a water is non-standard English – AVOID in written exams!
  • Make sure that your handwriting is as clear and legible as possible (unlike mine).
  • Don’t play it too safe.  Be clear and concise in your writing, but remember: this exam is a chance to demonstrate your abilities.  An exam full of simple sentences and banal pedestrian vocabulary will not get you the mark that you deserve.
  • Don’t cry on the paper.  It smudges the ink.

Score A * in English Second Language: Gore's Tutoring Dubai

Gore's Tutoring Center in Dubai helps students by providing after school tuition support for English as second Language. Gore's Tutoring Center is located in Dubai Knowledge Village (Block 19, Second floor).

The CIE & Edexcel English as Second Language are similar in many respects and result in the same qualification, but you might want to consider the following before making your choice.

·       There is no poetry on the CIE course. This can make it attractive for students who don’t like poetry. However if students want to study English Literature at some point, the Edexcel specification is preferable, because it provides a foundation in poetry.

·       The Edexcel specification includes a short anthology of prose and poetry, which has to be studied for the exam.  There is no need to study an anthology for the CIE exam, however when an anthology piece appears on the Edexcel exam, it is published in full in the exam paper (so there is no need to memorise it, just to be familiar with it). The CIE paper also features similar prose passages, but these are ‘unseen’ (so you will be reading them for the first time in the exam).

·       There are two tiers of entry for the CIE exam: core and extended tier.  The core tier is intended for students who find English a challenge.

IGCSE English Language Tuitions in Dubai

The IGCSE English Language course doesn’t presuppose any prior knowledge about English, apart from the basic reading and writing skills of an average 12 year old. However it will give you everything you need to know in order pass the exam within 12 – 18 months. Unlike some online /correspondence/tutoring courses, which can be dry in tone, Gore's Tutoring Dubai's English course reflects the joy in learning, which we feel should be part and parcel of any English study and should enhance a lifelong love of reading and (hopefully) writing.

Gore's Tutoring Course consists of 10 chapters, which cover all the reading and writing tasks you will need for the exam, such as comprehension, composition and creative writing. We give plenty of practical guidance, together with short exercises to test your learning, and we’ll tell you all about exam technique. There are 5 tutor marked assignments, including a mock exam, and the option for extra past paper practice.

Gore's Tutoring Dubai is a premier tuition centre based in Dubai Knowledge Village (Block 19, Second floor).

IGCSE READING PAPER ANSWERING TIPS by Gore's Tutoring Dubai

IGCSE English Reading Paper : Common Mistakes

Gore's Tutoring Dubai English Teachers have highlighted some common mistakes that students make in IGCSE English as Second Language (E2L) Reading paper.

Very long / unnecessary answers

Keep your answers short and precise. The examiners want to see that you have understood the questions, and able to give exact precise answers.
Suggestion: Don’t give more information or details than you need to. Keep your answers short.

Out of questions: Answer to the Point

It is so common that students are not answering what it is asked for.
Suggestion: Make sure you get what is asked from the beginning. Whether it is a “how” question, or it is a “why” question, or “where” or “what” etc..

Confusing answers

Some time students might just copy the whole phrase from the passage as the answer. It is ok to do so (if what you copy is the right one), but you might just give a confusing answers to the examiners.
Suggestion: Use your own words to communicate the answers. It is best to check, though, that your answers can be understood by someone else clearly.

Listing a number of possible answers

When students don’t know the answer to a question, they tend to list as many as possible answers they could find in the passage. Listing a number of possible answers is not a good idea. It will just waste your time.
Suggestion: If you don’t know the answer to a question, you can attempt a guess by choosing what you think is a relevant section from the passage. But you should write down only one point (or more if the question asks for more).

Estimate own conclusion

Be careful not to offer an inference or try to come up with your own conclusion than what is stated in the text.
Suggestion: Just look for the information (by scanning and skimming) that is in the text. Remember, all the answers needed are in the text.

Insufficient number of answers

Make sure you have read carefully how many points (or answers) you need to provide for a question. When the question asks for 3 advantages, that means you need to provide 3, not 2 or just 1. If there are 3 lines provided in the question, put each advantage on each line. Beware not to use “and” on each line, cause you might have included the other point in one line. Thus causing you not able to find more point.
Suggestion: Be clear on how many answers (or points) are required. The questions will state this clearly, so make sure you have provided the number of points asked for.

Create answer from the question

Some students think that if they turn the words around in the question, they might find the answer. This is never the case – the answers are always found in the passage that you will have read.
Suggestion: Don’t look for the answer in the question! The answer is always in the text – look there instead.

Ignoring map, chart or diagram

Don’t think that a map, or a chart, or a diagram is just there as decoration. It is likely that the answer to one of the questions will be found there.
Suggestion: Make sure you read through all the resources you are given carefully. Including a map, or a chart, or a diagram.
